Conviction "in absentia" ("par contumace") has mainly a political value unless the defendant absconded AFTER being arraigned or otherwise brought before the court. Add a BOUNTY for them and other people might get interested in turning them over to the country that wants them. Extradition is the easy route. Dead can be a little more rewarding though.
