All too often. I say it can be a good thing if it's for the right reasons or the risk is well thought out!
I have an example of good risks, I work for a company where I have the power to suggest who should be hired and fired, usually my suggestions are taken seriously and put into action! I haven't fired anyone yet! Anyway someone was doing their job all wrong and we were losing money because of it! but this person was helping in other ways that was saving us some money. So I had to do the math but in the mean time I had to make a decision on what I wanted to happen. So I suggested that we replace this person. we did and when all the future numbers came back we would have lost 3x the money than what that person was saving us, so it was a good decision but not for the one being fired!
An example of a bad risk is, I was late for a court date and it was raining and there were high winds that and my regular car was having the oil changed so I was driving a very light nissan 350z which has good traction and blah blah blah but when I was going almost 95 on the freeway no amount of traction could've helped me. I ended up floating across 3 lanes and almost hit a few cars and narrowly missed the side of a semi-truck. I was so scared that I got off on the next exit and re-evaluated what I was doing, so I realized that I was close enough to take the back roads. That was an extreme situation of throwing caution to the wind and lets just say it STUPIDITY!!!

I do NOT throw 'caution to the wind' -- because if I did -- I would not now be enjoying in my Retirement MY OWN HOME and MY Pension (that I earned) or being able to travel or be where I want to be when I want to be.
So for me -- I worked HARD to achieve the goal of a stable Pension and Retirement, and after many, many years of HARD WORK (and buying my way out of a very disasterous and bad marriage, plus raising as a Single Parent TWO disabled children), I am FINALLY FREE -- they are all out of my home, I can choose the TV channel I want to watch, and I can enjoy the HOME my Hard Work EARNED -- and just be able to relax without any nastiness or things being broken or any other problems or others around.

I do not believe throwing caution into the wind is a very good idea. Because, it might blow very far away and will never see caution again and you would be very sad.

not any extra. i exploit to formerly I had childrens, bu after having them i don't have the time, potential,or funds to attempt this. Plus that is extremely problematical to throw caution to the wind after I first ought to get a sitter. =)

When I do, it usually comes back and bites me!
and that is not a good thing on any occasion.

I admire that element in some people but it does have it's downfalls if excessive! I, on the other hand, am a very grounded person and I always look before I leap.
