Of course if its a private school and sometimes in public. I think it would be ok to mention it in class but not preach it. When it comes to the origin of things like creation vs. evolution then of course both. No one knows for sure the real way everything came about so therefore you should present both views and let the kids see all points of view. Also religion is everywhere and it would be good to expose the kids to a little

Yes and no.

In public schools, which are essentially beholden to the state/federal government, a line needs to be drawn. Religion itself is an integral part of culture: therefore, schools should definitely introduce the gamut of religions found worldwide. However, it needs to be done objectively. They must be introduced in a way that does not single out ONE as the "correct" religion. You can't teach Christianity's "superiority" to Buddhism, much less the other way around. It's school, not church. Diversity (culturally, ethnically, etc) within the public arena must be respected for the benefit of the student body.

Private schools, however, are not entirely beholden to the same rules. Because they are not subsidized by the government and privately maintained, there is room for specialization. If a private school considers itself, say, Muslim, they have every right to include in-depth study of the Qur'an within the curriculum.

Overall, it's a fine line to walk. It isn't "good" or "bad", per se. It's more a matter of Constitutionality and the issue of separating church and state.

I think it's important to teach children the significance of certain religious books (i.e. Torah, Bible, etc) as literary pieces and how a lot of literature is impacted by these books. Learning about religion is important to understand cultural differences (World History classes), but it should be taught in a non-bias atmosphere. We cannot pretend it does not exist. We need to teach children about tolerance, if not celebration for differences and avoid creating "tunnel vision" at all costs.

I think it is good to teach HISTORY and ORIGINS of religions in school, but NOT to teach the actual doctrines as fact. Religion is part of culture so it really can't be seperated completely from the history of mankind.
