You should probably start by getting a demo version of a good software and go through all of its tutorials, you can go to autodesk home page and get a learning version fo Maya software or 3d Studio. Once you have mastered their features, you can try the blender software (free software) that you can download at blender.org is my memory is ok, because the licenses for the other programs are really expensive.

Else, you can go and try e frontier's softwares like Poser and Vue.

But you really need to get used to understanding the whole Cartesian thing to really get what you want.

Then you can try going as a trainee inside a post production facility, I really think that if you want to walk this way, you should first start with the programs mentioned above, and then get a full view of other high end stuff like Flame, Inferno, and stuff like that.

You can also try Combustion, Smoke, and Toxik to reallyyyy add on to them..

hope this helps a bit....

I'm also getting into 3D animation and mainly I've bee fiddling around with Lightwave 3D v7 to learn. I'm not very familiar with Maya and the other 3D programs mentioned, but from what I've run across Maya has similar capabilities to Lightwave.

I was mainly drawn to the program because it's been used in major movies and I want to eventually get into making movie-quality animation and special effects.

www.newtek.com

This is the main site for Lightwave, even if you don't pick it to learn on there are several dozen (written and video) tutorials that will provide you with a good idea of the terms, concepts, and work you'll be doing with a 3D animation program.

A bit of additional advice. I have an older computer (about 3 years old) and doesn't really have the capabilities to run Lightwave. I'm assuming that Maya and the other 3D programs are similar to Lightwave, in which case whatever program you decide to learn on it will need a video card with 3D graphics capability (like OpenGL), a lot of memory (to store all your objects and scenes), and a lot of proccessing power (to cruch all rendering data). If you have and older computer like I do you'll have to upgrade before you can really dive into 3D animation... it's one of the things that keeping me from really getting into it. Also good 3D programs aren't cheap the latest version of Lightwave (version 9) just came out a while back and its around $1,000 or so last time I checked, I figure similar programs will be about the same.

As for getting hired on as a trainee... haven't seen any places like that. I've been looking into video game programming courses (like DevryPowerUp) that include 3D modeling and animation as part of the course, but I don't have the money for that either, so right now I'm going very slowly trying to learn stuff myself until I can save up enough to get into a course. You might want to look into video programming courses if your looking for formal 3D animation lessons.

I'm not advocating downloading,,,, but- the 3dsmax program is thousands. if you can take a class at a school with a good technology art program that is ideal. I don't know what a student version costs. anyway for learning purposes, if you download it's not going to hurt the company, the only way to learn is to be able to work with it. you can't do modeling or animation learning from only books or demo. there is too much involved.
good demos can be found on utube, google searches, cgtalk.com is THE site for 3d. also for 25 bux a month you can sign up for lynda.com. they have incredible tutorials on almost every program
