That's a great question, and very complicated as there are different kind of producers. Executive producers raise money and get a credit on the film. Line producers are behind the scenes people that make things happen and may Exec produce as well. A line producer is a glorified gofer but more. He may get permits, plan logistics and a lot of stuff like that. They are a lot like directors but not artistically involved in getting the shot more logistic.

A film producer initiates, coordinates, supervises and controls matters such as raising money, hiring key personnel and arranging for distributors. The producer is involved with all phases of the film making process from development to completion of a project.
