It depends on how much music he wants to put on it. I have a Rio Carbon 5Gig and it holds a lot of music. If you wnat to be like everyone else get an IPod, or you can be different and go with an actual MP3 player. Check them out online b4 you buy.

NOT an ipod.
There are many good players out there some will do video some just audio, but you want to be able to have versatility, or at least I do and you don't get that with the whole ipod/itunes thing.
