Umm, no, not in a modern, urban city.
But I would NOT be out camping in the woods in the middle of nowhere. Bears can smell blood from miles away! (I guess it's the same in the ocean. A shark could also "smell" it. Although no woman in her right mind would go swimming with a pad. A tampon maybe, but then the scent isn't really noticeable).

Yes it definately has an affect on some animals.
I know that my dog is more protective of me and acts a little different around that time.

Animals are attracted to women who are on their periods, such as horses, deer, and bears. My husband who works with horses is always telling me to stay away from stud horses when I'm on my period because they can smell your scent and can harm you.

yes, that is why it is important for women to keep themselves clean during that time of the month, It makes animals think that their is a female in heat.

i don't know about ALL animals, but during Madonna's "Like a Virgin" the lion trainer/tamer had to ask if she was on her period because lions are attracted to it.
(This was according to VH1's Pop Up Video ^.^)
