Volunteer to help in a homeless shelter or kids home or similar.
Start by checking with the Salvation Army or St Vincent De Paul.
A group of my friends often get together for a 'waifs and strays' Xmas. People with no family celebrate together. Check with your school office to see if there is anything like that among students.

Definitely decorate. Inside and outside if you can. Get a x-mas tree if you can, but if not get a tiny version. Lots of lights and little nic-nacks around. Burn Christmas-y scented candles. Watch lots of holiday movies and specials. That's a big one for me. A few days before x-mas go window shopping in a mall if there is one nearby. They are always decorated nicely and bustling with shoppers in the holiday spirit.
As far as the actual Christmas Eve/Day if you're going to be totally alone then, like I said, pick your favorite holiday movie to watch on Christmas eve snuggled up in pajamas with hot cocoa or whatever you like. Find out the best times to call certain loved ones on x-mas eve/day depending on their schedules. On xmas morning make a special breakfast and explore a pre-purchased gift you've purposely held out on until that morning.
If you're religious you could also attend a mass at a local church on xmas eve or day and that might help too.
Good luck getting in the spirit and enjoy!

Well, I see one of two options. *if i were in this position any how* I would use this time to walk around town and look at the stores and the decorations put up, and reflect upon the past x-mas's. Or, find out where a good joint for people to hang out...be it a club or coffee shop...and see if you can't find a couple 3 ppl to chat with, get talking and then tell them your situation, that your new to town, and don't know anyone. You might find a new friend or 2, and you might not. As for spending time with someone during x-mas, If it were to be with someone I met recently, I'd say meet up again in that place, or at some social event.

Do others:
wrap toys with Toys for Tots.
Get a name or two from an Angel Tree (many churches - some stores).
Sing in a church choir / go caroling.
Get a food handler's license and help serve at a homeless center or do clean-up/wipe-up duty.
Go to church.
Give to a bell ringer and ask if you bring them a latte.
Traditionally, there are 12 days of Christmas - From 12/25 to 1/6 which is the Feast of Epiphany. Do a secret blessing for someone each day.
Write 12 letters to lonely people in prison/nursing home etc.
Visit a nursing home and help people sign cards or listen to their stories.
Shovel snow if you are blessed w/ such.
Go to a store - find a mother w/ at least 4 struggling children. Explain your story and ask if she would like help watching them for an afternoon. Show her your student ID.
Leave a gift for the garbage man - sealed, they can't accept homemade.
Find a production of A Christmas Carol or Nutcracker Suite
oh, and God bless you merry, lass.

continue family traditions that are special to you. I had a tradition of making butter cookies at christmas with my grandmother, when i moved across the country, I got the recipe and still make them every year, even after 26 years. Also find people like you who are seperated from their familys for the holidays and try to spend the day together. Also do some community service, help serve a meal at a local shelter Christmas Day, or wrap presents for a senior center. Have a wonderful Christmas!

even when people move away, they still go home to be with their family for the holidays.
I work in an upscale restaurant in kansas city that is open for all holidays. We are always packed for xmas and thanksgiving. We always have people come in b themselves and sit at the bar and eat a nice dinner and just have fun with everyone else at the bar on holidays when they don't have family in town. try to find a similar restaurant in your city. Make sure its a nice place tho, and not full of weirdos.

Find a nice church to go to. Check the local paper to see if there are any Christmas craft fairs and such to attend. One year when I was going through a divorce, I felt very alone during Christmas, so I just read the Christmas story in my Bible each night and really let it all sink in. I read it from the Gospel of Luke and read William Barclay's commentary with it and it turned out to be the most meaningful Christmas I've ever had.

Start by decorating all over the place and playing Christmas music. Invite someone over for Christmas dinner or a pre-Christmas party. Play the hostess and you won't have time to get bored or lonely. On Christmas Day, be sure to call your family and loved ones and share the time with them. If you DO find yourself lacking for things to do, pick up the Bible and read the story of Christ's birth and count your many, many blessings.

Go nuts decorating!! Last year was my first year at school and I was very homesick around the beginning of December because it was when my family normally started to get into holiday mode. So I put up massive amounts of Christmas lights and a little tree and it seemed to take my mind off things until I could be home.
