Who Can Claim Copyright?

Copyright protection subsists from the time the work is created in fixed form. The copyright in the work of authorship immediately becomes the property of the author who created the work. Only the author or those deriving their rights through the author can rightfully claim copyright.

You don't need to do anything online or spend any money to legally protect your work.

On the first page simply write your name followed by a copyright symbol (a little "c" in a circle), and the date, and then sign it. This is sufficient, however, if you want to be really thorough, enclose an entire copy of your work in an envelope and mail it to yourself asking at the post office for the envelope to be date-stamp over the flaps (gummed-down openings). When it arrives at your home, do NOT open it. Put it somewhere safe. You now have legal proof that you created the enclosed work at that date.

Spending money at any online copyright sites will not protect you any more efficiently, and will be a waste of money.

I definitely second Igor's answer. Mail it to yourself and keep it safe. DO NOT OPEN IT cannot be stressed enough as you maintain the integrity of the document.

If you find yourself needing to copyrighting a lot of information, it might be in your best interest to rent a safe deposit box to store it all in. That way you will minimize your risk of having something terrible happen to your original copy.
