You could spend a lot of time trying to quantify and atriculate what defines a team player, but the definition of a team player is quite simple. Any definitions or characteristics you might come up with will all point back to this defining characteristic...
Team Player = Someone whose primary interest lies with the success of the entire team and not his or her individual success or accomplishments.

A team player is more concerned about the good of the team over individual stats. This type of player will make teammates look good, do the unheralded defensive work, take hard fouls, and do all the little things to make the team better. This type of player is loved by teammates and coaches. The media and general fans tend to overlook this player's contributions because they are obsessed with scoring, even though there are other parts of the game that are required to win a game. The team player is there to help the team in any way possible. That's my definition of a team player. A team player doesn't whine about not getting enough shots, or getting the ball/puck or whatever.

Much like my answer in a similar question, in my opinion, the best definition of a team player is an individual who is willing to do (first and foremost) whatever role is expected of him or her (This is designated by the coach).
A role player may only play in a game for a quarter to a few minutes in order to spell the regulars. In some cases, they may not even play at all and are expected to provide leadership whenever possible. Role players could be specialty players such as Steve Kerr (Three points), Bruce Bowen (Defense), Chuck Hayes (Rebounding).
Overall, a role player should not be a distraction to their teams (e.g., complaining about playing time) and instead be part of the team solution in order to reach their ultimate goal--which is to give their team the best chance of winning.
Hope this helps.

Someone who helps a team win despite sacrificing personal statistics. Assists and rebounds are both good indicators of team play because it shows the player is willing to pass and compete for rebounds. A team player leads the team, providing words of encouragement when the team is staring down controversy. Most importantly, a team player never publicly criticizes the coach.

My definition of a good team player is someone who doesn't hog the ball and think thy're the best. They have a good team relationship with thier team on and off court. They are the ones giving moral support and being the least selfish player who'll give up their shot for an easier shot to their teammate.

A good team player is one who looks out for everyone in his team and is responsive to all the members of his team.
He is ever alert and takes pride in being in the team.
But most importantly, he should put the team before himself. That makes a good team player.

A team player is unselfish and causes the other players around him to become better players. Magic Johnson and Larry Bird had those qualities.
