Someone who is not complacent nor totally exerts his will on others; someone who works well with other team members and values their efforts and contributions as much as his; someone who is willing to do anything to allow his team to win, even if this means passing the ball to someone else in a tense situation where he himself can try to score a point; someone who isn't pushed around but is always listening; someone who gives his opinion to the team but is not afraid of rejection and values the opinions of others as much his own; someone who is not greedy over the ball; someone who is not a ball hog.

A team player is more concerned about the good of the team over individual stats. This type of player will make teammates look good, do the unheralded defensive work, take hard fouls, and do all the little things to make the team better. This type of player is loved by teammates and coaches. The media and general fans tend to overlook this player's contributions because they are obsessed with scoring, even though there are other parts of the game that are required to win a game. The team player is there to help the team in any way possible. That's my definition of a team player. A team player doesn't whine about not getting enough shots, or getting the ball/puck or whatever.

In my opinion, the best definition of a team player is an individual who is willing to do (first and foremost) whatever role is expected of him or her (This is designated by the coach).
A role player may only play in a game for a quarter to a few minutes in order to spell the regulars. In some cases, they may not even play at all and are expected to provide leadership whenever possible. Role players could be specialty players such as Steve Kerr (Three points), Bruce Bowen (Defense), Chuck Hayes (Rebounding).
Overall, a role player should not be a distraction to their teams (e.g., complaining about playing time) and instead be part of the team solution in order to reach their ultimate goal--which is to give their team the best chance of winning.
Hope this helps.

When a player knows he can easily take his check for at least 30 points in a game but instead decides to spread the love around a bit and make the rest of the team look like they're part of a team.

A person whose ego is under control, and whose every aim is to advance as a team, help their teammates play better, move without the ball, be aware of the position of others on the floor, and maximise good scoring chances no matter who scores.
A player who only considers team accomplisments important, and to whom individual stats mean little.
A modest player that knowledgable people know is valuable to the team.

Someone who will sacrifice anything for his team/teammates. Even at his personal or statistic expense.
