duck-bill platypuss and the spiny anteater. Okay now there is something I must clear up. The spiny anteater is the same thing as the echidna. Wikipedia refers to it as a short-beak echidna. But if you go to the echidna article it will say the echidna is also known as the spiny anteater.

Monotremes are tthe egg laying mammals. The Platypus and Echidna are the two members. Both of which I am glad to say occur in my neighbourhood. We see Platypus while walking our dog around the local lake and Echidna when we go into our local forest. I believe the young of both are referred to as Puggles. There is one spieces of Platypus but the Echidna ranges into New Guinea with a few spieces. Echidna also featured in Greek mythology.

I was always taught that a mammal is an animal that gives birth, not lays eggs. Do you mean to tell me that my grade two teacher was wrong (and consequently every science teacher since then)? I seriously thought that that was the definition of a mammal...

Otherwise, please someone tell me the accurate definition of a mammal!! My world is crashing down all around me...!!!!!!!!!!

by the way a mammal is an animal with mammary glands (milk producers)...so you can lay eggs and be a mammal...and not everything that gives birth to live young is a mammal
