You can do it without a lawyer and it can be done pretty quickly at the county courthouse.
If you're worried in the least that he might try and pull something on you or if kids are involved, I suggest hiring a lawyer to help you put things in order for you, but shop around! I wasted a lot of money on a "cheap" lawyer in King county!

Honey, filing for divorce is easier than filing out the registration for a new car at the DMV. ....seriously. Do it yourself. Here's how step by step:
1. Go to your state's website and click on the court access icon. (every state has one)
2. Click on down loadable forms (they are free)
3. print up divorce forms, usually about three to five pages
4. Fill them out.
5. Have them notarized.
6. Make four copies.
7. take them to your clerk of courts (located in your county courthouse)
8. Pay a filing fee. ($50-$60)
9. They'll give you a courtdate, then stamp them, keep one and hand you back three.
10. Then take two down to your local sheriff's office and asked for a process server.
11. You'll fill out more paperwork on your husband (type of car, where he works, height, weight, hair color, etc.)
12. You'll pay another fee for process serving ($35)
13. They'll serve him and return you a copy as proof he's been served.
14. Then show up at your court date with your copy, the proof of service copy and the judge will order the "cooling off period". (usually 3-6 months) and give you a date to reappear.
15. If you and your spouse don't reconcille prior to that date, you show up and the judge grants your divorce.
It's super easy and if more people knew this, lawyers wouldn't be making so much darn money! I work alot of these cases for low-income parents and have learned a thing or two about how the court system works, it's not as scarey and complicated as they want you to think.

I went to Barnes and Noble and bought a kit with all the paperwork. After looking at the stuff, I decided to hire a paralegal. Since you both agree, it is mostly a paperwork thing.
We made up so I never went through with it.
I hope things work out for you.

My daughter used a firm on the internet, put in her info and paid them. They sent her the papers, and all she had to do was file them. This was in WA. I don't know what would have come next, as they reconciled.
Best of luck to you.
