Before purchasing consider all costs of ownership ~ especially insurance. Some insurance companies won't insure them. Others will sell you insurance if you can afford it. They are in a high risk group.
Good luck finding a new one --- and remember to keep the shiny side UP!

My local Kawasaki dealer almost always seems to have one on the floor, as they seem to sell pretty well around here. The MSRP is $2,999, and you'll probably need a few more hundred for tax and title (plus another couple hundred for safety gear).

And it seems they hold their value pretty well where I'm from. A 600 can lose more value in five years than the total you'd pay for the Ninja 250, and as more cautious sportbike riders often start out on a Ninja 250, there's a lot of demand for them. I've heard that many Ninja 250 owners have sold their bikes within a week of listing them online.

If you're looking for a smaller bike to learn on, I would definitely go with the new honda cbr 250 instead of the kaw. It has almost the exact same performance, but much higher quality and lower cost of ownership. And the bike looks good too. You can ride the honda much longer because it has a much more relaxed riding position. In the future you will want to move up to something bigger and better, but can keep the honda for riding back and forth to work or school or running errands and such. The honda is a much better choice. I've been riding for almost 40 years.

Ninja 250's are no good...but they run about $1500-$2500.

Stay away from the 250cc, they don't hold their value, and you will out-grow it very quickly. Get a 600cc to start with.
