Winter is a great time to go around Old Town.
Sea World is pretty close to Old Town, and you can probably spend a day there. Further west of Sea World is Mission Beach, with Belmont Park, which has an old wooden roller coaster (the Giant Dipper) next to the beach boardwalk.
In Old Town itself, there is the State Historic Park, where you can learn about San Diego's early history and check out historical buildings. There are also quite a few good Mexican restaurants and other shops just south of the state park area. There is also the Presidio hill, which is good for picnics and is home to the Fr. Junipero Serra Museum. You can get a nice view from the top area. SE of the state park there is a collection of Victorian homes and other buildings in Heritage Square - not as exciting, but the buildings are cute.

There is a company called Old Town Trolley Tours that can provide a little driving tour of the area in their orange and green trolley cars. Don't confuse this tour company with the San Diego Trolley (red trolley on rails) that can take you from Old Town to downtown (check out Little Italy and the Gaslamp Quarter) or Mission Valley (shopping and restaurants).

You could probably spend a day in old town, or even a half-day. Check out the Casa de Estudillo and have lunch or dinner at the Cosmpolitan Hotel Restaurant (Mexican food) next door.

Old Town is wonderful at Christmas- lights,music,dancing- excellent food and stores. Yes you could spend a good day there. The gaslamp Qtr in Downtown is nice for food, clubs etc. There are hotels too there. Go to Balboa park- the museums in the old spanish original bldgs from the worlds fair are gorgeous and well worth it- the Zoo is next door too. Also up the 15 fwy is the San Diego wild Animal park- they do a great light show in winter. Mission Bay with Seaworld was nice. We went for x,as last year and the show with carolers. shamu and fireworks etc was so cool- sounds like a wierd combo but very well done. There is also the big battleship in the harbor to tour thats a museum and ports of call and I heard they even have a large ballon parade at new years downtown....have fun!

Expect to pay $100+ per night.

$99/night. Omni San Diego Hotel. 675 L St, SD, CA. promo code: OMNIZOO. Saw it in travelzoo.com

$109/night Wyndham San Diego at Emeral Plaza. 400 W. Broadway, SD, CA. Code: BPR02. Saw it in travelzoo.com

There are alot to do near the Old town. Take the 2hr cruise to look at sea otters and under the Coronado Bridge. Go visit on a huge navy ship by the dock.

Go to Balboa Park, San Diego Zoo, and San Diego Wild Animal Park.

Must eat at The Fish Market Restaurant and ask for outdoor seating in a late afternoon to enjoy the ocean view. You're actually sitting above water.

Check out tripadvisor.com and see how the hacienda hotel in old town rates. You can get other reviewed ideas from there as well.

San Diego in December will be sunny to rainy, it depends, shorts and t shirts to pants and jackets. If you're there and have time you might want to visit Julian in the mountains for a nice drive and some fresh apple pie and french onion soup. Old Town is half a days worth of touring.

Sea World will be open and so will the world class zoo. To me, SD is really all about the beach, but ...
You can visit the Stephen Birch Aquarium near UCSD.
