The running back is the guy that stands in the backfield by the quarterback and gets the hand-off. He is the one who carries the ball on running plays. The running back used to be called a halfback, a tailback or a flanker , but these days, the generic term is running back. The quarterback sometimes runs with the ball, but is not called a running back.
(In the rare case of Michael Vick, maybe he should be).

Well, to tell you the truth about what a Running Back is its the position thats on the Offense* and hes plays next to the Fullback,behind the Quarterback.And he is the one who does all the running plays along with the Fullback and he also does alot of the Blocking for the QB to prtect him from some of the Defensive players(Like maybe some of the Linemen/Line Backers/Defensive backs) and I KNOW this VERY Well Because I myself am a Runningback,Safety,Punt Returner,and Kick Returner in Football
