Hi! I'm the mother of 10 month old identical twins.
1. I didn't find out it was twins until our first ultrasound at 21 weeks. The doctor only found one heartbeat, I was measuring exactly where a woman carrying one baby would have been at every doctors appointment.
2. My only "sign" was that I had HORRIBLE morning sickness.
3. If there's a family history or you have some of the other factors that increase your chance of twins ask your doctor to do an ultrasound.
Congrats on your pregnancy!

I have heard that when you are having twins your pregnancy symptoms are doubled so to say. Because the levels of hormones in your body are doubled. But there is no guaranteed way to know until your health care provider either sees two babies on an ultra sound or hears 2 heart beats with a Doppler.
Also there is such a thing as a hidden twin. They say that sometimes you wont find out until about 20 weeks when the babies are big enough that one cannot "hide" behind the other on an ultra sound.

I was pregnant with twins 13 years ago, and what I noticed was that I was so sick all the time. You usually get morning sickness really bad. I could not stop throwing up, it got to the point were I lost 13 pounds in the first trimester. I started throwing up even before I missed my period. Do you have twins in your family? That my increase your chances of having them too. I did not start to show until I was about 14 weeks. Hope this helps.

Your doctor will likely recommend an ultrasound in your first trimester if you're unusually large for your gestation date. The most likely explanation is that you or your practitioner miscalculated your conception date. The ultrasound will help determine how far along you really are and whether your size is due to your carrying more than one baby.
If you're pregnant as a result of a fertility treatment such as in vitro fertilization (IVF), you'll probably have an ultrasound within the first eight weeks to count the number of embryos. Ultrasound is almost foolproof at revealing multiple pregnancies, particularly after six to eight weeks. However, the more babies you're carrying, the easier it is for one to get overlooked.

The majority of twin moms report that they had the average symptoms, just multiplied. Many reported increased nausea and vomiting, morning sickness. Some complained that the sleepiness was ten times worse than previous pregnancies or what they expected from pregnancy.
Size Matters
If your abdomen or belly begins to grow more quickly than it should it might make your doctor or midwife wonder if you have twins or more. They will check the growth of your uterus at every visit, after about 12 weeks, it might seem to be bigger than expected. This could mean that you have twins or that they've got your dates wrong.
Fetal Movements
Some moms report that they felt like they had an octopus in their abdomen. They claim that they felt near constant movement in all directions. This can be a sign that you are having more than one baby.
Lab Work
Often times your lab work may come back with altered numbers. This is particularly true of hCG values in pregnancy testing and in the AFP testing. A higher than normal value on these tests can be because you are carrying more than one baby.
Finding out for real.
There are many ways to confirm twins or more. The most common is early ultrasound. Though one caveat, done too early and one of your babies may not be caught on tape! This testing can be done because of a suspected problem, like bleeding, questionable dates, suspected ectopic (tubal) pregnancy or other concerns.
Ultrasound can be used to follow your multiple pregnancy to watch out for potential problems like vanishing twin syndrome, twin-to-twin transfusion (TTTS), growth problems, etc. Usually you will be scheduled for one per trimester. This number will be increased if you have complications.
Gone are the days, for most of us anyway, where our twins are undiagnosed until birth. Though remember there are lots of reasons to explain intense symptoms that have nothing to do with twins or other multiples. I personally experienced much less nausea than I had with my singletons. I never carried huge, because they were side by side the whole time. I also never felt much movement.
So the bottom line is, if you have multiple reasons to believe you're carrying multiples, talk to your midwife or doctor about determining the truth. Ultrasound and sometimes palpation can be used to determine if there are two or more inside. You can't rely simply on symptoms or lab values.

You can have an increase in pregnancy signs. Of course everyone is different. I would wait to see what your dr says. It was my turn to have twins in my family but I am pregnant with one baby and my first was a single also.

Supposedly it was my turn to have twins too but both pregnancies were single. However my second pregnancy the doctor swore up and down she heard two heartbeats and I had not one, not two but THREE ultrasounds which ALL showed only one fetus and sure enough when they did my c-section for my daughter she was the only one in there...

Well you kinda have to be careful about twins......
I am a twin and when my mother would go to the doctor to get her sonnograms to see if the "baby" was okay, my twin sister would alwasy be DIRECTLY on top of me, so the doctor thought my sister woulde be born with 3 arms. Turns out, he was wrong, they just never saw me!!

i had triplets 4 years ago so maybe i can help. instead of gradually getting bigger you would grow more rapidly. i knew at my 4th week something wasn't right due to the extreme hunger but when i would try to eat i would get sick. Then at my 7th week i started getting these awful migraines everyday at the same time. in the 11th week i had an ultrasound and at first the nurse thought it was only 2 because the third was hiding. she had to really exam the sonogram to tell
