Because that's what little girls do when they die. I heard it myself on Christmas. In an empty old school. I tell ya - scared the bejesus out of me.

I think the movie you're talking about (with the little girl singing) is A Nightmare on Elm Street, in which case she is not singing "Ring Around the Rosie", but "1, 2, Freddy's Coming For You".

Now, to get back to the original question, you're talking about the stupid Japanese horror films that everyone seems to be so obsessed with now (such as Ju-On, The Grudge, etc.). I personally think it's stupid, but it's almost always the only acception to a little girl singing in a horror movie.

Why not a boy? Some people think that a little girl singing (unpredicatbly) is scary. I don't understand it either.

Young girls have an innocense about them that young boys don't. I guess producers/composers use them to show the contrast between the good (like in children's play songs) and the bad (whatever the horror movie is about). It also can be really eerie taking a song that everyone knew as a child and throwing it into a horror movie that's bloody/gorey etc.

Little children are always scary in a horror movie, it's out of the ordinary. A child wouldn't be in a horror movie to be killed, they are there to add the weird and terrifying parts to the scenes.

because a girl's voice is both sweet and scary, while a boy's voice doesn't give much effect in providing fear....

2) Girls are more innocent
