I would have to say Shakespeare. He was very prolific and wrote in all sorts of genres. No one in my opinion has ever topped him.

In my opinion, one of the most striking authors of all time is George Orwell, he wrote succinctly and inspiring, highly critical in relation to the then social affairs. Moreover, some of his novels've been regarded as contemporary classics, for instance, "Animal Farm", "Nineteen Eighty-Four", etc.
His essays're also superb, try reading his "Why I Write", "Politics and the English Language", or "Such, Such Were the Joys", etc. and you'd see why he's one of the greatest writers in the 20th century

Too many wonderful authors to narrow it down just to one!
I could make a top 100 list at best, but really I've read some incredible books and there's billions to go.

Ken Follet. He wrote many books, but "Pillars of the Earth" is simply awesome. I guess you'd have to read it to get where I'm coming from.
