It should have identifing marks such as Sterling, .925, Mexican silver, etc. Silver Cleaner or toothpaste will polish silver up. It it is not silver silver cleaner will actually dull it or even remove the finish.

the chain should say .925 somewher on it, marking that it is sterling silver.

The only person who can give you bad luck for a reason is God. The person who created the chain mail is stupid. You don't know them, as it is a chain mail and they cannot curse your life. The letters in the chain mail are not some freaky alive *things* that give you bad luck if you don't forward them. Don't believe in this crap!

you could try a silver cleaner the only down side is that it might change the color and if it is really cheap it will probably ruin it.

Silver tarnishes it doesn't chip. If it chips then its fake, if it tarnishes and the tarnish can be removed by gently rubbing it then it is probably real.
