this is a common issue on 1998-2004 chevy trucks and suv's. I have had 6 blazers in a row and every single one has done this. part of the sending unit has gone bad and GM refuses to make it a recall item. the only fix is to replace the entire fuel pump assembly for around $800.
I fixed one...then said screw it and just left the odometer on the trip setting and just watched my miles for each tank up. The pump itself will still work....its just the electronics for the info to get to the gauge that goes bad.

Find the gas tank. Find the fuel sending unit mounted near the top of the tank. Find a wire going to it...test it with a 12v test light like this...

by clipping the clip to the chassis and touching a bare-metal spot attatched to the wire. Test it with the ignition switch on. It could be the wires or the sending unit in the tank (a replaceable part).

There could be something wrong with the sender itself in the tank, or the gauge has screwed up somehow, or possibly a body control computer, as some would call it. Hope these get you close or in the right direction.

GM has had a problem with fuel level sensors going bad on 99 up year model trucks, but you can buy the sensor by itself from the parts dept at the dealership.

i own a repair shop, and you need to check the fuse for it,and also check the connection at the plug on the tank,,it may be making a bad connection, but if all this fails it may need a new sending unit installed on it,they do go bad a lot and i have put a few of them in,and the bad part is the tank has to come out of it,,so lets hope its a fuse,,or a bad connection on it,but at least you have a good starting point,,good luck,i hope this help,s,,and happy thanksgiving.

Try checking the fuse before you take the sending unit out of the tank.
