I do some self talk.......I reason with myself, that my situation is temporary and things will get better.....And they usually do......

Exercise, call a friend for help, watch mindless TV for distraction, listen to beautiful music, dance, remember depression is temporary, and practice the HALT theory: I ask myself, "am I Hungry, Angry, Lonely, Tired? If so, I don't think to hard until I've made it so I'm not Hungy, Angry, Lonely or Tired. When I feel better I can decide what to do to make things better. Sometimes being depressed is like being sick, and you just have to be gentle with yourself til it passes. Don't drink or get loaded, because the depression will just be waiting for you (and worse) when you sober up.

Get involved in activities or school courses that you like. You could go to concerts, plays and the gym. The key to dealing with depression better is keeping yourself involved with things that you enjoy whether it is sports or just taking a class. The longer you sit around, the more difficult it is to get going. Make a schedule once you have decided what you will do this will help you because you will have something to look forward to. Change your schedule as often as you need to, this way you can arrange activities as you want.

I watch my cattle go fishing and make faces at this mean old bull that lives on my south 80. He is the poster bull for depression. If I'm really depressed, I'll call the vet and send him to give that mean ole Angus a check up. That is always good for a laugh and the ultimate cure for depression. Did you know a vet can do sixty mph on a downhill straightaway?

Get in the car and travel to a city that I like but don't visit very often and enjoy the getaway feeling away from the regular routines of everyday life. Spend the entire day there if you feel like it, close the town down and drive home in the wee hours and enjoy the quietness of the night. It always helps me.

Take a walk outside. The weather doesn't matter, I dress appropriately. Just getting some fresh air and seeing things differently than being inside. I take my pet (dog) with me so we both benefit. It might sound crazy, but I talk to my pet as we are walking along. I come home feeling refreshed and so does my pet. He's all healthy and happy and I feel so much better also.

EXERCISES....especially running something kind of intense

I think about the things in life that are important to me

I think about people that are worse off

and I pray

Life is too short to be depressed. I know that sounds simple but it is true. Everyday you have a choice to be happy or be sad. Which ever you chose remember you only get to live this day once and it could be your last.

If you are suicidal, talk to someone fast!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This possibly sounds really cheesy, but it's true. I look up pictures of butterflies. I can't feel depressed anymore when I'm looking at them. I don't know if it would work for severe depression but it works for me.
