My quilt is basically just a padding sandwich. It's only around 20 years old, and it is a little worn, but will it really hurt it to use machines to wash and dry it?

Use the delicate setting on your washer and it whould be fine with cold water as far as drying hang it over a door to dry never dry any quilts in the dryer they can get sucked into the dryer

Only on a gentle cycle. A quilts too big to hand wash.
If you don't have that cycle on your machine, make a trip to the laundry mat. It'll be worth the extra few dollars. Otherwise you'll ruin it. Drying in a dryer should be fine.

I wouldn't and definently don't dry it in the dryer!

You should hand wash to be safe
