I am strugling with an addictive personality. I am a very "good" person, with a flaw. Has anyone got any advice? What is the root cause of an addictive personality and what can be done?

I am mainly addicted to alcohol. I have problems with drinking. I do not get "wasted" every day...but I always drink some, and gambling....I hit the casinos way too often.

It seems if I quit doing one thing something else always takes it's place...I want to work on the root cause, I am tired of being the rat the shocks himself to death or the monkey that dies from an overdose.

the addictive personality is hereditary

I don't consider myself "flawed"
I'm unique

as for what can be done?.. realize you have the addictive nature and try not to act on it

I'm the same way, but you just have to find other things to do. Keep your mind off it by staying busy with other activities. You weren't specific, so I don't know *what* you are addicted to, but you may need professional help. There are many counselors or therapists who deal with this sort of thing. There are also support groups - you might want to check those out, too. Good luck!

get rid of the flaw. you can do it, you just dont want to. i think the cause of an addictive personality is selfishness. that is caused early in life and if you could find the cause, it would help you understand why. genealogy also is a factor. you can go to all the shrinks you want to, but you are the only one who can solve the problem, and i think if you really look deep inside yourself, youll know what to do. good luck.
