I think my iPod needs a new battery, but I'm afraid to send it in ( will my songs that were transferred not on CD be erased? ) What exactly do they do to it?

Your songs shouldn't be affected because all they do is open the casing of the iPod and replace the battery; the hard drive isn't touched. Having said that, it's better to be safe than sorry. It's always a good idea to back things up before sending any memory-based hardware for servicing or repair. You can use a tool like YamiPod to back up the songs from your iPod.

The battery is not a primary battery. It is a storage cell that recharges when you plug the ipod in for reloading. It should not need replacement unless it is defective, which is kind of rare.

If you plug it in periodically the battery is expected to keep well charged. Does its light indicate that it is charging but never goes to solidly indicating charge is done?

You can transfer out the songs into a library and then reload it from that library.
