It is called "Throttle Calibration Procedure", and it must be done every time the battery is disconnected.

1. Run the car until it is at normal operating temperature.

2. With the air conditioning turned "OFF" and the handbrake on, place the trans in Drive and allow the car to idle for a minimum of one minute. ( there is no maximum stated time, but I did mine for 2 minutes to make sure.)

3. Turn the engine off, but leave the ignition on and hold the throttle wide open for a minimum of one minute. (again, no maximum stated time.)

Hope this helps. It didn't work for mine, but I already know my trans needs an overhaul. The book says that if you don't perform this procedure the trans will perform poorly and not shift correctly.

Find out what the trouble is for the check engine light. Keep in mind that when the battery has been run down or disconnected the computer loses some memory and it takes a while to regain it.

If the check engine light is on, then you should get the diagnostic done on it. Autozone usually does them for free, if in your area, or find an autoparts store that has that ability. Good luck.
