To erase and reburn you need to use a RW disc. a DVD-RW for movies and CD-RW for audio. RW stands for RE-WRITABLE.
On a standard disc (CD-R, DVD-R) the R stands for RECORDABLE.

no you cannot dvd -r and dvd+r are record once only discs .

_dvd-rw and dvd +rw can be recorded on and then erased.

dvd ram discs can be recorded and erased also they can be edited meaning if you record something say of tv you can remove adverts etc but not all recorders and burners are compatable with dvd ram.
