The content of the game itself is perfectly safe.

As with any online game that aloows chat, be it voice chat or text chat, what your child may see or hear is at the discretion of the other individuals playing the game. Many games use filters in an attempt to filter out vulgar or sexually explicit language, but players find ways around these filters.

I play online games as my schedule permits, and my stepsons, eleven and thirteen, play online games as well. Most days the chat is pleasant, some days it's just plain foul. My personal opinion is that if your child knows what's socially acceptable to say and do, then an off color or vulgar remark on a game is no more harmful or less common than what he/she endures at a public school, and will ignore it as such. I have seen no negative impact from my own experience playing, or from my parental experience from the boys playing.

The game itself isn't bad. Its a fun multi-player online game that a lot of people enjoy. The problem is that some players who curse/swear in the game and sometimes some players use sexually explicit language. The game has filters to block it out but they either find a way around it or type it in differently. But there's a chat options that let a player choose between chatting, friends-only chat (which most people use to avoid the language and such) and chatting off.

I've played it for a while and I'd say for the most part it should be fine. But with any online game you run the risk of running across people who use vulgar and sexually explicit language. But the odds of that happening to your child in Runescape are probably less likely than that happening to them playing online checkers or anything like that. But as far as the game itself, it should be fine.

It would not hurt him physically unless he rips out his hair in frustration. The vulger language in the game automatically gets starred over and there is nothing else bad.

i would say yes, but teach him/her to be careful around other people. the game offers a chat off funtion, and that he could only talk to friends.
