Its not your timing,
IT IS with out a doubt your carburetor.
These 3 bbl carbs are very hard you fix, even Manufactured rebuilt one have troubles.
They do make a aftermarket Carb kit.
or Find a Old Import mechanic that still remembers how and let him fix it.
or figure you got your moneys worth out of it and crash it.

I don't believe 1985 had computers and throttle bodies. This one has a 3 barrel carb as stated in the description. I believe you may have a computer on your timing. Timing doesn't cause changes in idle speed. It sounds like you have a vacuum leak. The engine surges when it heats up. Sounds like possibly a loose bolt or leaking gasket on the intake manifold. I would not mess with the timing unless you have a timing light and instructions on setting it.

i own a repair shop, and it could be the timing, and it is adjustable, but there is also a idle air control valve that will cause this to happen also,it helps control the idle, and if the car starts to idle low the computer will kick the idle up on it for a minute or two, this is what causes the high rpm surges on it,and the timing can cause it too,but it is adjustable on this engine, there should be a sticker under the hood with the settings on it,,good luck,,i hope this help,s.
