Generally, if you are wearing a one-piece dress that is form fitting and shows every line and wrinkle, a one-piece slip underneath would help minimize the lines at your waist. Wearing a separate cami and slip would show a line (or two) at your waist underneath your dress.
I use a body shaper slip with a built in bra. Here are a few links to sites that give you some idea of what is available.

If you wear a slim fitting dress, you should wear a full slip. A cami and half slip could give you a line at your waist under the dress, and if there is any lace at the hem, that could stand out too. In addition, the elastic from the half slip might cut into your waist a bit, giving you a bulge below and/or above the band that could show through your clothing. You want the smoothest body line possible under your clothing, and a full slip would give you that better than two separate pieces if you are wearing a tight(er) dress.

I don't think it is necessary these days to wear a full slip. If you are wearing camis then it should be suffice to cover and also same goes with the half slip. I guess if it is for something very very formal.

You can wear full slips with dresses if you like. It's really more about preference that anything else. You can even wear a full slip alone, with tights and flats, or a sweater and heels.

Just wear the full slip as a nightgown. But even then there are drawbacks, as it's harder for those big uglier guys to draw up in back (pun intended).

USED TO BE FULL SLIPS WERE WORN WHEN YOU COULD SEE THROUGH YOUR BLOUSE OR TOP AND SEE YOUR BRA. THAT DOESN'T SEEM TO BE THE RULE ANYMORE. FULL SLIPS ARE ALSO WARMER IN THE WINTER DEPENDING ON WHERE YOU LIVE.
