In regard to prior posts, glass will scratch glass, as will a number of other semi-precious stones. Your best bet is to take the stone to a jeweler. There he can examine it with a loupe, and a device that examines density of the stone.

Gee, you might want to call and let the police station know that you think you found a diamond. My mom lost te diamond from her engangment ring after 31 years of marriage and was devestated, too bad someone didn't find it and turn it in.

Even if it is a diamond, it's not yours if someone else claims it.

Try scratching a piece of glass with it. A real diamond will leave a mark. If it does I'd take it to jeweler.

yes, send it to me! just kidding, yes if you take it to a jewlelers they can do a heat test on it to see if it's real or a qc. real diamonds can take more heat, the test take about 1 min and you can see him doing it. he woun't ask where you got it just how big it is and if it's real, most of the time it don't cost anything hoping you might want to have it set in something they have. by the way glass will cut glass so don't go on that.

pawn brokers and shops that buy jewelery for scrap will have a small battery powered tool that sends light into the stone and will say yes or no to the diamond issue.

Scratch some glass...but if it's real there may be a serial number on it. Take it to a jewelry store to ask.
