Forestry sounds boring, and four year academies are too restrictive. Can anyone come up with suggestions for a two or four year degree or a job that can satisfy my wanderlust?

Well there are Graduate Degrees availabe in Ocean Science, Nauticle Science, Marine Engineering. U can get job with Navy, or Oceanic research, Also u might want to work for research agencies that go deep into oceans to discover secrets.
U may also want 2 work for Discovery, national gographic, BBC and other such Channels as they also have dedicated teams for Oceans etc.
Indira Gandhi National Open University, New Delhi India offers a distance learning Graduate course in Nauticle Science that spans from 1-2yeasr and thi sis very cheap and good start.

I'd suggest marine biology but, be forewarned it is tough to get a job with that degree. When I thought about it back in 1991 there was like a 10 year waiting list for marine biology jobs. You could go to Alaska or the East Coast and work on fishing boats! Sounds like you are into adventure and from what I've heard it would be.
