At work, it's fine. It really does depend on the employer. The company I work for completely forbids men from wearing earrings...there's only one exception and he's proven himself extremely valuable to the company, so not only does he get away with earrings, but huge stretched lobes.
However, in the interview process, it's still a bit of a taboo for men to wear earrings to the interview (with obvious context-based exceptions: musicians, stylists, you get the idea). Like they say, the interview is not the place for a fashion statement...do that AFTER you have the job.
Still, publicly acceptable style is an ever evolving thing, so where earrings are on the increasingly acceptable side of the line, 20 years ago it was another story. In the context of therapists, though, I think it would demonstrate your connection with what's current and stylish. The rest of the package...how you dress and carry yourself...those also fit into the whole perception of how somebody (client or employer) views you...but then, you're getting a psych degree, so you already knew that...right?

Coming from a 21 year old point of view, a young professional wearing earrings would be acceptable. If you are good at whatever you plan to do and they like you, your clients/customers will accept you as well. My primary care doctor is the most annoying person ever, (she tried to convince me to change my major from Mass Communication to English) yet I still go to her because she is good.
If you decide to work in the private industry they may tell you if the earrings are acceptable or not.

I would really like it if my doctor or therapist wore an earing. It shows he is open-minded and free-spirited. But that's me. I'm very free-spirited myself, so maybe it's just my style.

i don't really have an answer, because i think it depends on the person. but for the business world, i think it is more professional to not have piercings, unless of course the person is in a band
