Yes Folks, I live in Maryland and I hate it when people say we are a Northern State. We are not any way associated with The North ! Unlike the north, we are very rural, and we DO still have some confederate flags! Maryland Came into This country as a Southern State, it is below the Mason Dixion Line, The Accent is KINDA Southern at southern maryland and so are the people. WERE NOT THE DARN NORTH! Folks please don't use that Mid Atlantic BS. Because Mid Atlantic is not a direction .

Northern? Southern? The distinction is difficult to make for many states because they are generally categorized by their affiliations during the Civil War, not so much as to their geographical location. That makes it tough.
Generally being a southern state meant being located south of the Mason-Dixon line (which Maryland is). The Mason-Dixon line is actually the common east to west border of Pennsylvania and Maryland. Interestingly, if one were to extend the line to the east it would go through the southern part of NewJersey. Hm? We should all be glad, northern or southern, that we live in the
UNITED STATES OF AMERICA!

Yes, Maryland is a southern state. The US census bureau classifies it as a southern state. It is south of the Mason-Dixon Line. And its state song contains the phrase "northern scum". Plus the internal government structure is more closely related to the south than the north. Because it has become urban, many Southerners, especially in the Deep South, consider it Northern. But Atlanta, Jacksonville, Memphis, and New Orleans are proof that there are urban areas in the south.

Technically you are right because it is South of the Mason Dixon line but I've noticed that it is considered northern on a lot of things, I think mainly becuase of the civil war.
But what's stupid is that Maryland was with the South during the Civil War and was a slave state. The fact that its close to DC made it hard for them to secede or something. They were really neutral or something at first.
Most people would like to be considered northern because generally southerners are labeled dumb and rednecks...I kno...I'm from around here. But if you want to be considered a Southern state and associated with pro slavery people aka RACISTS...call yourself southern.

Maryland stated out as a Catholic colony, and religious colonies were originally a hallmark of the north.

But with the Mason-Dixon line, it wound up as a southern state.

But with the Civil War, it wound up as a "border state" - slave-owning, but not successionist.

In recent times, it seems to be grouped mainly as a northeastern state.
