My son is on soybean formula because he's lactose intolerant (the most common reason for giving a baby soy formula). He had severe gas, loose bowel movements and his stomach often gurgled. He never vomited, either.

A baby doesn't have to vomit to be diagnosed lactose intolerant. A baby doesn't even have to be lactose intolerant in order to drink soy formula. Your granddaughter is still getting all the nutrients she needs from soymilk formula. As long as it eases her digestive problems, it's the right formula for her.

My middle daughter required soy formula as an infant due to severe colic from milk based formula. She was unable to tolerate regular milk until she was almost 4 years old. At about 3 I started with nonfat dry milk mixed with the soy then to plain nonfat milk and then 2% and worked up to whole milk by age 4. She hasn't had any further problems with milk or milk products and is now the mother of a 16 year old. Some people have lactose intolerance their whole lives and are required to use lactaid to be able to tolerate them. But with infants and small children it is best to avoid milk products if they have severe problems digesting them.

My daughter used it at first because they thought she was lactose intolerant because at the hosp she was spitting up too much. Then she had blood in her stool so they changed that too! Her 3rd formula was a milk based formula that was lacto free which she continued to spit up. It would curdle in her tummy. Lastly they put her on Similac Alimentum. It worked great. The gas stopped and milk stopped curdling in her tummy. My pedi basically explained that the proteins in it were broken down more so it was easier to digest.

There is a condition called lactose intolerant, (allergic to dairy) perhaps the baby has been recommended by her doctor to try the soybean formula.

it sounds like she could be lactose intollerant. I am 25, I was lactose intollerant to both breastmilk and milk formula, I was on soya formula then was fine at a year on regular milk, Just after I turned 25 in the spring I was diagnosed lactose intollerant again.
