You must have one IP address for each network card in your computer... and only one IP address for each. If you have a laptop with both a port for a network cable and a wireless card, then you would have one address for the cable and another for the wireless. Otherwise the router does not know which one to talk to.

You may also have a private and a public address. Within your home network, each computer will have an address (usually 192.168.0.xxx). This is a private address, because it exist only on your network, and the rest of the world can not see. Your cable or DSL modem will also have an IP address. Any computer that talks to the Internet will do so using the modems IP.

Your computer sends information to the router using its private address. The router then sends it to the modem which sends it to the Internet using its public address. When the reply comes, it is send to your router which then routes the reply back to your computer using its private address. This allows several computers to use one modem. Each has its own private IP, but share one Public IP. The router keeps track of what messages go to who within the private network.

If you have two networks, you can access both by having two IP addresses bound to separate NICs, one on each network.

I had come for the duration of a situation once I had to alter IP handle on 5 computing device having access to information superhighway and chatting with the server X for accounting application.the comparable server X working the accounting application for different computing device working community video games(diverse IP selection).considering that the two set of computing device's have been bodily on the comparable community, I had assigned one IP from the recent selection to the server X.it fairly is like one actual community with 2 logical community and the server X can communicate over with machines in the two networks.
