As they are usually immune to new technology and fads, get them something retro from the past. Find out an old hobby they had, maybe get them some dvds with old television programs. Maybe restore an old photography from their youth. Be creative!

Gift cards are great ideas as they are often on fixed incomes. They can actually go buy what they need rather than going without it because they can't afford it. If you wanted to do something more personal than that you could get large print books, a nice throw to use as a lap blanket, also hand crafted personal gift certificates for a dog washing, lawn mowing, gutter clean out, etc. They are more thankful for things they can actually use. Good luck finding that special gift. Merry Christmas!!

Have each family member purchase gift certificates to their favorite restaurants (the more the merrier) Then design and create a "family" gift certificate on your computer, for each one. Once printed out, have that family member(s) sign it and attach a real certificate. Wrap, tie with a bow, and watch for the smiles!
Added touch: Include a brochure or menu. During winter months, have the food delivered! But be there with them, enjoying the dinner as well, because YOU are what matters to them! Merry Christmas!

How about the gift of time? Many senior citizens feel left out of their families' lives because of everyone's hectic schedule. Maybe you could take some time out of your week and do something with them: sitting talking, going for a walk, playing cards, etc. You'd be surprised how something as simple as spending time with someone makes a big difference.

If you want something physical to give them: make a coupon book with saying "good for one hour of card playing" or "good for one walk to the park" or something like that.

Depending if the senior is not able to get around much a good one is to buy them groceries that's if they are living modestly, if they are active seniors gift certificates are nice as they probably have everthing they need. You could pamper them by getting them a day at a spa or maybe hire someone to clean the house for them. Maybe they have a hobby or collect something and you could add to that collection. Maybe make a charitable donation in their names to their favorite charity.

I'm a senior, and I think I'd like money. That way if they need meds or food they could get it. Even a gift certificate at a grocery store or a nice restaurant would work.

Spend time with them, taking them places, doing the chores that maybe they can't do anymore. Take them to dinner or out shopping if they don't drive. If you are doing gift certificates, try to do them in small amounts for several different places. For grocerys, a lot of seniors shop around for the best deals or lowest prices. If you do several certificates in smaller amounts they can shop a several locations.

Hope this helps.

Fruit Baskets are nice to give and so are Gift Cards. Even though they are seniors and some may not be able to get out they still need items from stores. That way your helping them purchase things they may need with out acually giving them something they might not really want.

Restaurant coupons and the promise of your company during the meal.

Also, grocery store gift cards and gas cards. They usually have everything they need in the way of household items, but gas and food is very hard on what is often a fixed income budget.

Peace.
