Most environmentalists prefer trash to be burned so as to not contaminate the water supply.
Landfills in the USA are basicly outlawed because of legislation on the strict conditions dumps have to operate now a days.

Because there used to be no money in it. Now that there is billions to be made with this technique, we will eventually see a solution. Necessity is the mother of invention, but even mom needs to make some money in order to invent.
