A lot of children today time is spent mostly in front of a computer or playing video games. As the times change, so does the type of entertainment people engage in. You touched my heart with this question because I forgot all about fort building as a kid and it was some of the fondest memories of my childhood along with having a club house. :-)

I did and I'm 25. Not the playboy pinups, but the hammer and nails in a forest, yep, did it. The fort is still there...being used by some youngsters now I suppose...
I don't think the practise is dead here in Canada...there are just too many trees around, sooner or later we all end up in them!!
Yes of course they mostly play video games now, and that's probably because of the over protectiveness of parents. They want them where they can see them, and are afraid of some broken bones.
I'll tell my kids to get off their asses and show them how to erect a truly awesome tree fort myself...perhaps that's what they need, less busy parents to show 'em the way!!

When I am back home I see it from time to time. I used to live in a more rural area where you still see kids riding bikes and playing ball. I had a nintendo from when it first came out when I was a baby till now and I still spent most of my time outside buidling forts and that stuff. I think all the new toys does encourage kids to stay indoors but if parents would limit the amount of time their kids play video games or at least make them play outside more.

They don't have to. Adults are building all kinds of tree houses which may cost from a few thousand dollars on up into the millions. I just saw a site on the Net that describes them. Google tree houses and see what you find.

Reasons
1) Playstation, TV, internet
2) Parental paranoia about serial rapists lurking at every corner
3) Kids are involved in so many extracurriculars, they have no time for tree forts

You can thank all these new gadgets like iPod, PlayStation 1,2,3, all video games, computers, calculator, any thing materialistic crap, and too many toys, which took away a child creativity. I never had one in my back yard, but I did join many other kids in making one and it was ok.

It's probably not considered safe anymore.
The kids have to wear helmets just to ride a bike.
I am so glad I am not a kid today.
