A hit songwriter is a musician who either cannot perform the songs he writes himself, or prefers to sell his material. He writes songs and sells the licence for artists to sing/perform/record them. In this profession, many hit songwriters are hired for specific purposes (like movies) to create songs to fit a theme, or even a style of music so that his song can be used by another artist, and promoted through that artist without really acknowledging the hit songwriter except in official credits and financial records.

a hit songwriter is someone with the talent to write a great song, but cant really sing it. Like Bernie Taupin. He wrote all of Elton Johns biggest hits. If he would've preformed thim himself, they would've been flops. So he gets partial credit and the money for all the songs, which could be a hell of a living.
