A description once made of my job (home support worker) was that it is half volunteer/half paid. Kind of true since the wages are so low. If I didn't have to work for a living (barely a living) I'd like to volunteer at somethiing.

I teach Adult Literacy. It started because a friend of my fathers came to me and admitted that he couldn't read. He asked if I would help him because he wanted to read a speech at his daughters wedding. So I started teaching him to read. It made me feel so good that I started volunteering my time at the college to help others.

Since I stop getting paid at work long before I go home each day, I guess you could say I'm a volunteer too. The workload is so heavy that it's impossible to leave when the contract time is up each day.

Well if you google volunteer oportunities in your area you should find plenty. It depends on the needs in the area you are looking at. I live in an are that is mostly over 55 so there are a lot of volunteer jobs working with the elderly.

Good for you!
I volunteer for hospice and find it to be the most rewarding thing I have ever done in my life. My father passed away in Jan of 2001 and hospice was such a great help to us I felt like I wanted to give something back to them.

I volunteer at the Humane Society. Animals don't complain, and are happy for the attention. No matter how crappy my day may be going, animals cheer me up.

You know, I never thought about that. My family works with a woman here and she helps young kids, babies, teens, mothers in need. Anyway, my family puts together bags with toiletries, perfume, they sew baby quilts, and bibs, burp rags. They help supply a lot of what she needs for these people. When I had my 4th baby, He out grew all of his stuff. So i gave it to this woman so as mothers could have things for their babies. Gosh I had so much. I felt good that I could help. So if anything it would be to volunteer to help all these kids and mothers.
Her cause is called "PJ's Forgotten Kids" She tries really hard to do what she does, and my grandma, aunts, everyone helps out.
