My Dell laptop Inspiron 1000 was switched off during a system restore to an earlier date. Now when attempting to load Windows XP, a blue screen appears: "Bad Image Checksum. The image comctl32.dll is possibly corrupt." I can get into various menus by pressing F12 or F2 during startup but can't figure out how to reload my system disks. I've tried reconfiguring to an earlier known good configuration, loading system defaults, etc & now feel as a last resort I have to reload using disks. I guess it will erase all personal files? Please help---and thanks in advance for your time & advice.

I'd pull that hard drive, hook it up inside of a desktop computer ($12 adapter needed), and copy off your personal stuff before you restore from disk.
Actually, I'm thinking that you could boot up to a boot floppy, then copy that comctl32.dll file (to C:\windows\system32 as I recall?). I'd also check that hard drive by running scandisk with the /autofix option to make sure the drive is good. You don't wanna spend 10 hours rebuilding this computer only to have a bad hard drive?
Better yet, just go buy a 100-gig drive for $115 at your local computer store, and restore to that.

On Boot up press F8 and see if you can start up in Safe mode.
If so, select last Good Boot and see if that works.
If you get another Blue Screen, select Boot without drivers.
If it boots up, go to control panel, Add remove programs and see if you can remove your printer. Doing this will cause Windows to redo addressing in the register and recreate the start up files.
Shut down the system and do a reboot. If that fails, Boot into safe mode, go to c:\documents and settings select your profile folder, open the folder local settings and copy the my documents folder to a CD Disk.
Then shut your system down and reinstall Windows. During the installation, delete all partitions on the hard drive and recreate two new ones, one 20GB and the other the rest of the drive size.
Install XP in the smaller partition. Unplug your system from the Internet before starting the re installation.
Reconnect to the Internet after anti virus and firewall are installed.
Go to www.microsoft.com UPDATE to have all SP and patches applied to windows. Install latest direct X and media versions.
