Most women (on average) have 28 day menstrual cycles. Day 1 is considered the day when you start having your period. Ovulation typically occurs on day 14. So you can use a calandar to keep tract of your cycle.
In terms of vaginal mucus, during ovulation, it becomes clear, an more runny, kinda like egg whites (raw). This makes sense because it's function at this time is to nourish and protect sperm as they travel to the egg. If it were white and thicker, then the sperm motility would be inhibited.
Another indicator is body temperature. During ovulation, your body temperature should raise anywhere from 0.5 - 1.6 degrees. However, for this to be measured acurately, it should be taken anally to be most accurate, which may be uncomfortable for some so most people do take it by mouth. For you to know if your temperature is elevated, you should tract it using the calander mentioned above. I should mention, that your temp should be taken first thing in the morning, before you have been active (as activity can increase temperature itself).
If your intention is to become pregnant, sex (and sperm deposit) should occur 2-3 days before the temperature peak (occurs about 24-48 hr after release of the egg due to increase in progesterone upon release), sperm is viable for 2-3 days, but eggs are only viable for 24 hrs.
Hope this helps.

If you closely monitor your body temperature 12-16 after your last period start and know what is "normal" for you, there will be a 1 degree spike while you're ovulating. I think that's the easiest way to tell.

Also, your vaginal mucus should be clear, slippery and stretchy. You might be able to feel the egg release in your abdomen (small pain). You will probably feel uber-horny (studies show women prefer masculine features in men at that time of month). After the release there is spotting.

I have heard that your most fertile time is right after your period. But the only way to really know if you are ovulating is to buy one of those kits, because everyone is different. Definitely the mucus is not an indicator at all.
