I am looking for good books set in/about World War II, particularly Americans at war and/or Americans at home. It should be at a high school level. Thanks.

Anything by John Keegan and Sir Martin Gilbert.

Time Life Books offer many good titles on the war.

Look through Library Archives or on the net for past copies of Life Magazine or Time and for local newspapers, including the New York Times.

"An Army at Dawn: The War in Africa" by Rick Atkins I have read a few of Atkin's books he can carry a story really well while still being factual. Oh and even better I had just bought this because the one chapter I read was amazing. "Ghost Soldiers: The Forgotten Epic Story of World War II's Most Dramatic Mission" This book is very heavy for 7th grade but I think you can handle it, good luck.

I've just finished 2 such books that I really enjoyed. The first was "See Here Private Hargrove" by Marion Hargrove, about GIs at the beginning of WWII. It is a true, autobiographical account of the life of privates in the army, published in 1942 and still very entertaining and informative about army life in those days.
The second is "From Here To Eternity" by James Jones, also about a bunch of GIs at the beginning of WWII. This is realistic fiction about army men in Hawaii at the bombing of Pearl Harbor. This one is very gritty realism, with lots of whoring and gambling and other mess-up type of behavior: rather adult content considering it was written in the 1940s, but nowadays okay for high school if you like that sort of thing. This one is longer than Hargrove, but very readable and interesting.
Both books give a feel for life in that era.
