Hate is a definite, indifference leaves you unsure. Thus, indifference hurts the most.

It depends on which side you are on. Are you the one being hated / being indifferent to? Or are you the one being indifferent / being hated?
If you are the receiver, it hurts more to be indifferent to because that person chose to not even care for you. Isn't it that indifference is the opposite of love? If someone hates you, then that means that at least there still lies a bit of concern in there.
But if you are the sender, it hurts less to be indifferent. It may seem cowardly to just neglect someone, but sometimes that's the only way you could move one and grow on your own.

Personally, I think indifference hurts more. Hate can be attributed to cultural differences or personality clashes and those are more a reflection of the person doing the hating.
Indifference, on the other hand, makes me feel like I am being overlooked and ignored. Never a good feeling. ;-( It is especially hurtful if it comes from someone that I care a lot for.

Hey hambone...waving...
I have always heard that the opposite of love is not hate but indifference...you have to have some sort of feeling good or bad but indifference is nothing. Hate does hurt but indifference is more of an empty ache that cannot be filled. Hate hurts more but the sting of indifference lasts a lot longer.

Both hurts as much. Why? Because nobody doesn't like to feel hated or uncared for. Both hurts emotionally but some can handle both differently. I would say indifferences hurts the worse.

Indifference. Hate is atleast an emotion, and it is closely related to love. Indifference is just NOT caring, period. Even those who say they hate you will help you when you are desperate.

indifference. hate means that the person is actually dedicating some mental energy in thinking about hating you, which means at least they are thinking about you. indifference means that they really could give two Fs if you are alive or dead.
