professional poinsetta growers recommend that you introduce them to the warmer temps of the house slowly
if you can bring it in to a cool room for a week or so before bringing it in a fully heated room the blossoms and leaves won't fall off.

You can try, but be delicate. Poinsettia branches and bracts break easily and the white sap can be a skin irritant and might make you sick if ingested.

I've never been very successful in doing this. You need to be careful not to disturb the root ball of the plant. The roots are fairly shallow so you don't have to dig deeply to transplant to a containter.

Be careful not soak the pot or leave the roots in standing water. Keep the soil moist, not soaking wet. Try not to place the potted plant near sources of dry heat. If the leaves and colored bracts start to turn brown, move to another cooler area of the house.

My personal success score is one out of every three survives to be placed back outside after the holidays.

Hope this helps. Good luck.

Just be careful you don't cut through the roots and you should be fine.
