I have had excellent personal results washing my down duvets in my front load washing machine with hot water, regular detergents and a touch of bleach or Oxy-Clean or washing soda. I think it is very important to dry it completely in the dryer on a medium heat. I have had this down duvet for over 6 years and sleep with it summer and winter, the warmer months without a duvet cover.

Twin size will be fine in a home washing machine. Queens are pushing the limit for home machines. My king goes to the laundromat into one of the bigger machines. I use a product called Forever New, it is a very gentle cleaner.
Yes, medium dryer temp, not hot. Stop every so often and fluff it up, even with the tennis balls or shoe inside (clean shoe of course)
You might consider a duvet cover for your comforter.......it's like a pillow case for your comforter. It is removed for cleaning, every week if you wish, and then put back over the comforter. A lot easier to clean than the comforter, tho putting the duvet back on can be difficult until you figure out the trick.

It is possible, but be careful, because it may not ever have the "Volume" it had before.
If you really don't want to chance it, I would take it to a dry cleaners. ALL comforters are hard to wash from home, and when the dirt and detergent settles in the crevices (especially on a white comforter) it looks a mess!
Ultimately, the bleach etc you use is not as much of an issue as the size of your washer and if it will really get clean in your home laundry.

No bleach!!!!!
Gentle, cold perm press cycle.
Add tennis balls to dryer (tumble only - no/low heat) to keep the comforter fluffy.
Dry cleaner charged me $45 to clean my queen sized down comforter. I saw the owner of my local laundromat clean them just this way. Never paid the dry cleaner again!
