Yeah, I know... "Don't judge a book by it's cover" but there's something about books with old tattered covers that just attract me to it... It all started with "Firestarter" by Stephen King... It was on the rack at my school library... the cover was held to the book with duct tape, and the eye would just haunt my thoughts...
I think it shows that the book was used a lot! But it sure wasn't taken care of...
P.S. Books with new covers are always stiff and I end up bending it a lot to get some movement into it! :-)

I love them both, for different reasons. I love the old, battered and tattered covers because it means that they have been well used, loved and learned from. And that means that I have a very high probability of doing the same. I love the brand new books, because that means I get to break them in! In fact, the very first thing I do when I get a new book is to open it to the middle and crack the spine. Kind of makes it mine, you know? I just love books, period..... and I'll take them any way I can get them!

Both! I just love books no matter what they cover looks like but I prefer a brand new book because I like to be the first one to read it and bend the cover, but old books are awesome because they are half the price and other people love the book.

Do you mean hardcover or paperback?
I myself love the big ol' hardbound, cloth-covered, tattered book with fancy gold leaf on the spine. I know what you mean! Whenever I hold one of them, it just feels so magical...
My personal confession:I have taken the dust jackets off of all my (hardbound) Harry Potter
books. It just makes them look so much more authentic - as if they came from Hogwarts' own school library!

i would rather read a book with a tattered cover because that means that lots of other people have read it so its bound to be a good book

As long as the spine isn't broken, I don't care about how the cover looks. I hate reading books when I have to hold the pages in.

I like used books. I like to think someone else had this book and his eyes scanned over the same words.

I always buy a used book over a new one. I like to buy discarded library copies.

Half.com is a great place to get used books cheap.

I understand that a dog-eared copy is the sign of a good book, but I would much prefer a shiny new one. If it was given to me by a friend, with an inscription, so much the better!

Personally I like the beat up ones, because to me that tells me that it was a well liked book and many people have enjoyed its contents.
