If you have tried turning the steering wheel and still nothing happened and you are sure it is in park, you may want to have a mechanic look at the lock tumbler. this happened to me not too long ago, without warning, i went to start my car and the key wouldn't turn. some of the springs in the ignition switch were all bent, had to have it replaced. good luck.

The steering wheel is causing the problem, if the steering wheel lock is under pressure it wont allow the key to turn in the cylinder. Turn the steering wheel slightly before you turn the key, it will release the tension on the steering wheel lock.To prevent this from happening again, make sure that the steering wheel is level and straight before you turn the key off. If you shut the engine of and your wheels are turned they will put pressure on the steering linkage.

on my older astro i had to try to lift the key up on the outside and push down as it were on the end it almost seems the key wears down and doesnt contact all the strikers in the lock also possible is that the actual switch is seized it is located well down on the back off the steering column and is actuated by a rod from thekey lock mechanism

Turn the steering wheel very hard and hold the steering wheel to the right or left. Then while holding it to the right or left, turn the key firmly. Good luck.
