And for the bonus question how can we make it work in Haiti, Afghanistan and Sudan?

Please note: it doesn't or it can't is not an answer.

You must explain your answer such as
"it can't because of all the religious factions. The country needs a ruthless dictator similar to when Yugoslavia had Tito or civil war will erupt."

Yes and no answers only get you 2 points and don't provoke thought.

The short answer is "You don't". These cultures will not readily embrace democracy and would need the US to force them to accept it. The US insistence on democracy in Iraq is doomed to failure, and this will become increasingly more apparent as the years go by and the fighting against the US presence continues. Iraq is a special case because if left without a strong dictator the country will tend to break up into separate states, much the same way Yugoslavia did.

Trying to make democracy work in Iraq is like pushing a wet noodle uphill.

Who determines what form of democracy will work where. The question is based on a form of arrogance that permeates a society like ours.British democracy is not the same as the American form, and Canadian democracy is not the same as Japanese democracy.By the way what is democracy?Gov.of the people by the people?proportional representation? Is it democracy to jail and execute children?or build Bridges to nowhere while children go hungry and have no health care? You mention Haiti,Haiti was a democracy before America decided to invade and to remove a democratically elected gov.Is this the kind of democracy you are talking about?

The only way democracy will work in ANY country is if the people of that country desire it to work. In Iraq for instance, our troops are there training them , but at some point they have to pull out and let the Iraqis handle situtaions themselves. If they want democracy, they'll work for it. If they don't want democracy, they'll tuck tail and run.

I don't think that 'WE' can... Democracy must come from within. Is using guns and bombs to force a nation to accept democracy really democratic? A bit hypocritical I think... In most cases the best we can do is support opposition, but in some case that may be counterproductive if the US is unpopular in that country.

You don't MAKE it work. You can't make them do anything they don't want to do. The Iraqi people have to WANT it...and at the present moment they seem more interested in blowing each other (and our troops) up. But, moron Bush will keep us there anyway, trying to FORCE them to be happy about the government we've set up for them. He'll keep trying the SAME thing over and over, yet expecting DIFFERENT results; it's the definition of stupidity.

you can't make it work. Only the people in those countries can make it work.

Haiti had a promising democracy until the US overthrew Aristide back in 2004.

1. You won't like the answer but you have to
Secure the flanks .....We have to Engage and defeat Iran. The instability is comming from Iran. Iran wants us to pull out...then they can dominate the middle east.
You will not get victory nor democracy with Iran messing with the formula. It is just like China aiding Korea all over again.

"we" don't make democracy work in Iraq or anywhere else. We merely assist to help them get it and they put in their own style of democracy (which may be different than ours) and make it work by themselves.
